Canadian Warmblood Announces Recipients of Annual Awards

Brandon, Manitoba - The Canadian Warmblood Annual General Meeting was held in Brandon, Manitoba, March 31, 2007. It coincided with the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Those who attended were able to take in the evening festivities and equestrian classes, while spending their days meeting to review the year’s achievements and planning events for 2007 and beyond.

One of the many inspiring announcements came in the form of the Annual Awards. Horses eligible for these awards were nominated earlier in the year, and final result tabulations were supplied to the Canadian Warmblood Awards Committee for review. Awards are given in Dressage, Jumping, Combined Training, Hunter and Driving. There are three levels of performance in each discipline for Achievement and Year End Awards, based on Equine Canada (CEF) and/or USA Equestrian/AHSA standards.

Since the inception of the program in 1998, there have been a total of 48 Achievement Awards presented over all 3 levels and in 4 disciplines. The lineup from 2006 procured 9 of those, with 1 from Dressage, 5 from Hunter and 3 from Jumper. Horses registered as Canadian Warmbloods are eligible, as well as mares and stallions which are studbook entered.

Wolkenstar (Wolkenstein II X Aviary / Arkansas) pictured above - was the lone dressage candidate with a Level 1 Award. This mare was bred by Krammer Warmbloods of Alberta and is owned by Sara Alberni of British Columbia.

Of the five candidates from the Hunter Awards, it is interesting to note that three of them share the same damsire, Tudor Gleeman, who is from a line of Thorougbreds often seen in Warmblood breeding across Europe and North America. They are Midnight Oil (Furioso x Treasures Of Tudor) bred by Jacquie Daley of Alberta, Java II (Jiggy x Tudor Bouquet) and Focus (Flipper x Tudor Bouquet), both bred and owned by Lorraine Denhoed of Ontario. They were awarded Level 1, 1, and 2 respectively.

Two recipients of the Hunter Level 2 Awards were Westporte (Wolkentanz x Farah / Fabriano) bred by Joachim Boewig of Germany and owned by Darlene York of British Columbia, as well as Platinum Vom Rappenhof (Carino x Palma Nigra / Habicht) bred and owned by Cornelia Kempter of Quebec. Both of these horses are breeding stallions which have been entered into the Canadian Warmblood Stallion Book.

The three Achievements Awards for Jumping also went to stallions, all approved for breeding by Canadian Warmblood. It was the first year that Level 3 - the highest level - had been awarded, with all three going to owners KingRidge Stables for Double Diamond (Nabab De Reve x Black Diamond / Chin Chin), Jamestown (Quidam De Revel x Bali Des Salines / Alme Z) and Polyfax (Polydor x Granny / Grossadmiral).

'These stallions are having good success in the sport of show jumping,' commented Barbara Daley who manages the marketing for KingRidge. 'We like that the exceptional bloodlines they offer have transferred to the next generation, who are also demonstrating great ability for sport.'

From these Achievement Awards, only one from each category is selected for the Year End Awards. Candidates must be registered Canadian Warmblood horses. They were Dressage Level 1 - Wolkenstar; Hunter Level 1 - Java II; Hunter Level 2 - Focus.

Lifetime Performance Awards are also given annually. No horses were eligible for 2006. Patricia Carlson, Chair of the Awards Committee commented on this from a positive perspective. 'To date, only 5 Lifetime Achievement Awards have been presented, which truly reflects the high value of this Award that takes longevity in the sport and years to achieve.'
