Black Hole Sun made his competition debut at Spokane Sport Horse Farm Horse Trials September 26-29, where he won the Young Event Horse four year old division with an impressive score of 84. He then went on to win the Open BN division. Sired by Belshazzar (Beach Boy x Arkansas) out of Gemini V (Gervantis II x Bajazo) and bred and trained by former Olympian, Sandra Donnelly; Black Hole Sun is following in the footsteps of his sire who competed under Sandra in the advanced divisions of Three Day Event.
Sandra Donnelly is quite unique as a competitive rider being one of only two people to breed and compete at the Olympics on her own home bred horse, Buenos Aires. Her dedication and success as a Canadian Warmblood breeder is impressive. She acquired the foundation mare of this eventing line, Amphora by Arkansas out of Altea, from Touchstone Farm at the Fall Classic Warmblood Breeder’s Sale. Amphora produced her Olympic horse Buenos Aires by Bajazzo.
Later Sandra purchased Blue Moon, also by Bajazzo, a great grand daughter of Altea. Two generations later she produced Black Hole Sun, whose career path has taken him to California where he will carry on under the tutelage of Tommy Greengard. Donnelly and Greengard have their sites set on the USEA five year old Young Horse Championships next year as a stepping stone to the WBFSH Young Horse Championships in Le Lion d’Anger, France, where Greengard qualified and competed in 2024 with support from the USEA Young Event Horse Program grant. He is excited to repeat this experience, but first they have to win the five year old championships.
With six generations of Canadian Warmblood breeding behind him, Black Hole Sun is a shinning example of the depth developing in our Canadian breeding program. We wish them all the success in the world!
